Interview with Nashville Trio LANY

So, typically, I don’t post on Thursdays – but, seeing as how I didn’t post anything yesterday and my good friends in LANY posted a couple of rad new tunes yesterday, I just HAD to share with you their infectious new songs.

I posted back in April, a short little article about the boys and shared with you some of their tunes around that time.  But, here’s another recap for ya. LANY is comprised of Leslie Priest, Jake Goss and Paul Klein – a trio to be reckoned with. The smooth, 80’s dream-pop, almost r&b like sounds created by these three are so chill and effortless, you’ll be feelin’ the groove in no time.

I recently had the chance to do a fun little interview with Les Priest, (a close friend of mine now for almost seven years! CRAZY.) so, if you’re in the mood to get to know LANY a bit better – read on:

AMM:  Soooo, wanna give me a bit of background on the band? How did you guys come to be?

Les: Jake and I were experimenting with WRLDS last year and then Paul thought it would be rad for the three of us to do something. So in March we created LANY.

AMM:  Neat! Why did you want to make this kind of music particularly and what style or genre would you place yourselves under?

Les: I guess we’re landing somewhere between pop and r&b. and maybe sprinkle in some nostalgia. I don’t think we decided to make a certain sound exactly, but we’re definitely getting a feel for what LANY is or isn’t now.

AMM: Who does lead vocals? Is it you, cus I’m pretty convinced it is…

Les: I haven’t done vocals yet for this project. That’s all Paul. It’s interesting that you hear me.. most people that know my voice are saying the same thing. I guess we have similar timbres.

AMM: WHAT! It’s all Paul!? Holy moly. Yeah, you do! Okay, so, now that that is out of the way…..where do you see LANY in the future? Or, what do you wish to accomplish?

Les: Yep pretty crazy. We wanna do big things and make great music. I love creating with Jake and Paul. We’re ready for a lot of people to know LANY.

AMM: That’s awesome. Would you say that your styles are super similar, making it effortless to work with Jake and Paul? Or do you clash at times?

Les: Somewhere in between.. we all come from a slightly different direction musically and I think that’s why this is working well. It’s not always super easy but when it comes together it’s unique.

AMM: That’s really great. Unique is always the best, in my opinion. So, other than LANY’s Facebook, Soundcloud, Twitter…are there any other social media outlets or links you want to provide your fans with so they can share away?

Les:  We have Instagram! It’s a little bare right now but once we’re all in LA I’m sure it’ll be more active.

AMM: Ooh! What’s the handle to your Instagram? And yes, I can’t wait for that!

Les: Yea! Same as the others thisislany

AMM: Sweet. Thanks! So, that’s about it, I think – I mean, really I’m just stoked to see you guys evolve even more as a trio and the whole LA move will be awesome.

Les:  Thanks! We can’t wait.

Album Review: HAERTS; Hemiplegia EP

I’ve been meaning to do an album review of this wonderful band for awhile now. Finally, here it is! Meet HAERTS, Brooklyn-based quintet that is made up of members who hail from Germany, the UK and the US in an assorted United Nations/United Colors of Benetton style. Nini Fabi – vocals, Ben Gebert – keyboard, Garrett Ienner – guitar, Derek McWilliams – bass, and Jonathan Schmidt – drummer.

The band put out their EP Hemiplegia – total or partial paralysis of one side of the body – back in October of 2013. A very interesting title for a debut EP, but my guess is that it could have something to do with the effect that this bands music has on your body. With St. Lucia at the helm of this album, there’s no doubt that it’s heavily 80’s synth pop influenced, which is definitely not a bad thing. It’s cinematic in the sense that it often sounds larger than life, like it could be on the soundtrack of some awesome (probably cheesy though) 80s drama, but it never loses it’s directness and familiarity. Soundwise, we’re talkin’ airiness, but with subtly dense layers, infectious hooks, sweet funky bass lines, and plaintive, earnest vocals – earnest to the point of being slightly melodramatic, as the EP deals with love gained, love lost, and other exemplary pop themes.

The EP has four tracks:

  1. Hemiplegia
  2. Wings
  3. All For You
  4. All The Days

Out of these four, I would say my favourite right now is Hemiplegia.

This track definitely shines amongst the rest of the EP – with the exception of “Wings” – the showstopper track of the album.

But, back to “Hemiplegia”…. ;) Amongst a sea of same-old indie bands, HAERTS keeps it fresh. Fabi’s vocals are revitalizing. The smoothness of her voice skates over the vivacious pulse of the song, which eventually succumbs into a euphoric clash of sprightly indie-pop. The bands open-minded approach to craft, as they’ve mentioned their musical project being like a “blank canvas” onto which they’ve thrown ideas on, are seen quite vividly on this track with the repeated lyrics, “No, you can’t move up with your eyes down,”, a great little build-up in the song.

Overall, this EP has quite an impressive set of songs. All the more considering it’s the debut EP of this Brooklyn band. Fabi and Gebert wrote most of the tracks together and seriously have an excellent ear for strong, infectious melodies. I have high hopes for this band and cannot wait to see what they put out for their full-length album!

Song of the Wednes(Day)!

Hope you are all having a wonderful start to your Wednesday!

So, here’s my song of the day, along with the awesome music video! Really lovin’ what this NY band, ASTR‘s putting out right now. I waited (impatiently) for some new music by them to come out and voila! They just recently dropped an amazing EP titled ‘Varsity’, and it seriously rules. Varsity is made up of catchy pop tunes, with this amazing hip-hop/80’s vibe. Zoe’s vocals are bone-chilling, and every one of their songs will make you groove. Definitely check it out!

Check out their music video for “Operate” below:
