Right now, I can’t get enough of this song by Chance The Rapper titled “The Writer”. I am obsessed with the melody, the beat, the piano, Chance’s style of rapping..everything. It has such a great old school vibe to it, and if you know me, you know I’m a sucker for old school hip-hop a la Souls of Mischief, ATCQ, Mos Def..etc.
I found out that the song actually comes from Chicago collective THEMpeople‘s mixtape Smoke Breaks IV, where it serves as a bonus track. It was apparently made back in 2012, when Chance was working on his 10 Day mixtape. Over a reflective, piano-driven beat, Chance raps about striving for success and reflects that he’s “probably as good as Elton John.”
