So, I haven’t stopped hearing and seeing all this chitter-chatter about Ryan Adams newest album which is Self-Titled. It dropped just this past Monday and this extremely talented American singer-songwriter has now released his FOURTEENTH studio album! FOURTEENTH! Guys..that’s almost half my age!
Let’s be honest, Adams never ceases to make amazing music. He has talent for daaaays. However, let me just state one thing. This album is not your happy, go-lucky, life is wonderful kind of album. It is definitely a lot more moody than his other ones. Concentrating on hardships, broken-heartedness and pain. The lyrics are somber, and I don’t think there’s an actual happy song on the record – which to some (optimists), could be be a downer. I myself am an optimist, however the musical genius behind these “love lost”, downcast tracks cover up most of it for me. So, no, I’m not bothered by it one bit – I mean, it’s a bummer, of course, to feel all the emotion in these tracks and know that it’s real. Real pain, real experiences and feelings – but, Adams has lured me in with his melodic ballads and bursts of electric guitar riffs. They’re catchy, passionate and raw, and I love that. I personally think that a lot of it is super reminiscent of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – which, let’s be real – who doesn’t love them!?
My top 3 tracks on the album would have to be Track 1, “Gimme Something Good“, Track 2, “Kim“, and Track 5 “Wrecking Ball“. All of the tracks are great, but these are just my picks. I’d love to know your favourites in the comments!
