This week’s featured music video is the one, the only, very much loved and raved about “Chandelier” by Sia. The first time I heard this song (which wasn’t that long ago, since it recently dropped in March) I was infected with it’s contagious beat, a tripping hip-hop vibe, along with a bit of bubbly electronica in the distance. Sia’s always been one of my favourite artists, constantly reinventing her music and debuting edgy, out-of-the-box hits. I mean, after all, she’s written and produced for the likes of Christina Aguilera (“You Lost Me”) to David Guetta (“Titanium”) to Ne-Yo (“Let Me Love You”) to Rihanna (“Diamonds”) to Britney (“Perfume”) Beyoncé (“Pretty Hurts”). Really, which major pop player hasn’t tapped her for a tune?
So, when I laid my eyes on the video for “Chandelier”, I was literally jaw-to-floor. The young dancer featured in the video is none other than “Dance Moms” star Maddie Ziegler – an 11-year old dancing phenom. Ziegler dazzles the viewers with head-spinning choreography. Kicking, leaping, crawling, falling, twirling and hiding herself behind window drapes, all while rocking a blonde “Sia” wig. It’s brilliant, dark, beautiful and emotional all at one time.
Sia’s always been an exceptional storyteller, and she tells the story of a cry for help, literally set to the song:
“The haunting tale details the Aussie’s personal struggles with alcoholism and prescription drugs when she was still pushing her solo career. In a rare interview last year, she told Billboard, “I was really unhappy being an artist. I was always a drinker but I didn’t know I was an alcoholic. Then I got seriously addicted to Vicodin and Oxycodone.” (Source)
Needless to say, the video is a must-watch. So, without further adieu, here it is:
