The Laundress: Eco-Friendly Fabric Care

I’m about to introduce to you, or if you’ve already heard of this company – re-introduce – a wonderful, all-natural, eco-friendly laundry care and home cleaning company that may just change your mind about the way you do your laundry and home cleaning! Their name: The Laundress. Their mission: to empower style seekers with the importance of washing at home versus dry cleaning as much as possible.

Did you know that 90% of wardrobes don’t need to be dry cleaned and should be cared for at home? I sure didn’t! The founders, Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd, who previously worked at Chanel and Ralph Lauren, developed the line based on their own needs to properly care for their very fashionable wardrobes.

Many of us don’t know that dry cleaning is incredibly toxic! Not to mention the ridiculous, expensive costs! Gwen and Lindsey set out to create their own solutions to care for fabrics such as wool, silks, synthetics, denim and blends. Yup, you read that right! You can actually wash those items! Of course, there are some articles of clothing that need to be dry cleaned, but most (like cashmere sweaters, dress shirts, jeans) can and SHOULD be cared for at home. Who’d have known?! The Laundress ladies believe so much in our brand, that Lindsey even washes her Chanel jackets in machines and has done so for years, along with other countless designer items. CHANEL…you know, the high end designer with the double C logos?! ;)

Now tell me that isn’t devotion and just plain awesome!?

 

So, why should you use The Laundress for your laundry care and home cleaning? Here are a few reasons for ya!

 

To date, The Laundress‘ everyday laundry and specialty products are sold to 1,000 stores world-wide! They have collaborations with brands including Barneys, J.Crew, Le Labo, Net-a-Porter, Jenni Kayne, Anthropologie, and have been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle Decor, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Allure, etc. Preeeetty awesome!

So, you still want to know more, eh? Don’t worry, I’ve fully taken into account every product and my experience with them. Here’s a brief description of the products seen above (from L to R), along with my my thoughts on them! First off, The Laundress products are made with nontoxic, biodegradable, and allergen-free materials. They are also created with all natural ingredients (therefor, the color and texture may vary), are free of petroleum, SLS, phosphate, phthalates, and dye. They are cruelty-free and contain no animal by-products. Gwen and Lindsey also make sure to test all products on themselves.

 

Stain Solution (Unscented): Stains just plain suck. They’re frustrating and annoying when they happen, they’re frustrating to get out…you get it. From red wine and coffee to pit stains and more…Lord knows I’ve had ’em all. (LOL) Thank heavens that this solution really works! So, whether you’re trying to save a brand-new shirt or you’re reviving your antique bedding and heirlooms, just one drop of this powerful solution (I like to rub it in a bit too, for good measure) safely removes stubborn stains, old and new. It’s unscented, and it’s safe for all washable fabrics – both whites and colors!

 

Wool and Cashmere Shampoo (Cedar):  As I said before, I had no idea you could safely clean and preserve wool, cashmere, merino, mohair, blends, and more…but yep, you can! This specially formulated wash – which like all of The Laundress’ products, contains a concentrated blend of plant-derived anionic and nonionic surfactants, essential oils, and natural fragrance – is amazing at doing so! They’ve even combined sandalwood, orange, and rose with a base of cedar, for a modern take on that woodsy scent. It’s sweet and spicy, which is the perfect blend to naturally repel moths and critters. So, why dry clean when you can provide better care for your woolens at home, minus the toxins and extra cost?

 

Delicate Wash (Lady): This is by far my favourite product! Not only is the scent beautiful – with a blend of herbal and citrus notes of rich amber, bergamot, lavender and musk – this stuff works wonders on delicate items. I mean, ladies, you know how tricky it can be to care for delicates! From lingerie and items labeled “dry clean” to silk blouses and scarves, OY! It can be a bit daunting! However, this special formula removes perspiration, body oils, and stains while cleaning and preserving fabrics…and it does it dang well.

 

 

Wool and Cashmere Spray (Cedar): I simply can’t get enough of the warm and spicy smell of cedar. When I was younger, I used to have these cedar hangers that you’d dampen to activate the woodsy scent. It’d freshen up your clothes and closet so nicely! This spray, with its nontoxic formula and anti-bacterial properties adds scent while removing odor. Want to freshen up your sweaters, suits, coats, hats, and blankets between washes? All you gotta do is spray! It’s also a1 natural moth repellent and works great for closets, drawers, and long-term storage. (Ideal for items labeled “dry clean.”)

 

Delicate Spray (Lady): Like I said, this scent is divine! And who doesn’t love their delicates, closets, and drawers to smell clean and fresh?! This spray is also a nontoxic formula with antibacterial properties, and naturally, it adds scent while removing odor. Hallelujah! Spray to freshen lingerie, hosiery, dresses, and scarves between washes. (Ideal for items labeled “dry clean.”)

 

Last but certainly not least, the Wash and Stain Bar (Classic): This is a pretty brilliant little product! It was basically designed to clean those pesky, hard-to-reach stains such as the lovely “ring around the collar”, to tricky underarms, delicate straps, and more. It’s quite versatile and works great for spot treating clothing and upholstery, hand washing, and laundering on-the-go. It’s also – and conveniently sob- great for travel and it’s totally airplane friendly. Of course, it smells lovely too, the Classic smells like that clean laundry scent we all grew up loving. A blend of lily of the valley and jasmine with sweet musk, sandalwood, and a touch of citrus. Perfect.
