All natural, vegan and cruelty-free meets punk rock, rebel minimalist! The first thing that comes to mind when looking atBare Bones Body Care‘s branding and products. Isn’t it just the cutest?! The company was born after Monica, the founder and creator of Bare Bones, suffered with years of sensitive skin and allergic reactions. When she was younger, her skin started to react to the mainstream skin care brands and she was forced to switch to the “all natural” options available. Every time she’d read the label of a skin care product her brain went on ingredient overload. She never knew what she was really putting on her body until she did the research…then quickly realized that an “all natural” label doesn’t usually refer to most of the ingredients inside; in fact, the labels tend to mention just one or two of them. Bare Bones is about using only ingredients that will make your skin the happiest skin in all the land. Some elements are made from scratch, and others are sourced from organic and/or local suppliers. All products are vegan and not tested on animals. All Monica wanted were skin care products that had as few ingredients as possible, did what they were supposed to and weren’t harmful to her (or anyone else) in any way…so, she started making her own. Some of the products she makes are cleanser, toner, moisturizer and lip balm – and all in her kitchen! Monica promises:
Don’t you find it annoying when you’re in the market for some natural products and yet you still encounter the ever so annoying urge to read every ingredient listed…just in case it should have something you’re not going to like, or that won’t be good for your body or environment. Don’t lose hope! Bambu Earth is a line of natural, sustainable, and ethical products that claims to be “worry-free”, which means you don’t have to worry about what’s on the ingredient label or how your purchase will negatively impact people or the environment. Bambu Earth sources their ingredients from providers that are fair-trade, sustainable, organic and eco-friendly. Whew! Peace of mind, right? :)
In Spring of 2009, Bambu Earth was born. Amber had a desire to live a simpler, more sustainable life. She has been making soap for over 12 years now..so you know it’s high quality, and well-crafted! The soap and skincare is created in small batches by hand in an effort to better the community and world. Amber believes that nature, created by God, provides us with all of the tools most people need to live a healthy life. For this reason, Bambu Earth uses simple, all-natural ingredients, in their rawest form in their products to provide living nutrients to the skin. Their products are made with sustainable, ethical and local ingredients.
What about the origin of the store name? Well, Bambu Earth was named after their signature ingredient: bamboo activated charcoal. This ingredient (as Amber, founder and CEO of Bambu Earth has stated) is amazing, as it draws out impurities from your skin. Bamboo is sustainable, and grown without pesticides, not to mention it replenishes itself quickly. It takes about 5 years of nurturing bamboo before you even see one sprout – pretty crazy! After that, it grows about an inch per day. It grows so rapidly, you can actually hear it growing…can you imagine?
The two products seen above are amazing, and I highly recommend looking into purchasing them, cus, I honestly don’t know what I did before them. Most of the time, I feel like I’m pampering myself whenever I use these products, and I really enjoy and appreciate the wonderful scents of the products, but without any harsh chemicals added to it!
The Petitgrain Facial Creamis what your skin has been craving! A simple, effective cream that doesn’t have a bunch of alcohol or questionable ingredients. Nice right? Yeah, they’re great. They stand by their mantra and are consistent with the products they present. Natural, non-toxic, high quality and just plain good for your skin/body. I wanted to highlight my three favourites at the moment and give you the low-down on why they’re so awesome! So, here we go!
Pink Clay Exfoliating Masque: As HB states, “This is a truly beautifying and skin softening mask. Great to use before a night out or anytime your skin needs some extra nourishing and TLC. There are no fillers in this mask, just skin softening totally natural botanicals and clay.”
To be completely honest, this mask was not my favourite at first. I didn’t feel like it was doing anything. I thought it was just a pretty pink mask that simply sat there and maybe just calmed and softened your skin a bit. NOPE. This mask is no joke one of my new favourites! The ingredients are amazing, and after a couple of uses, I noticed a lot of benefits! Smoother, brighter, clearer, calmer skin. Here’s a list of the ingredients that make up this wonderful mask:
French Pink Clay: Pink Clay is for cell renewal, skin rejuvenation, and improving elasticity. It is very good for mature skin, bust firming, broken capillaries, and puffy dark circles under the eyes. It is high in Iron Oxide and Silica and helps to regenerate connective tissues.
Rosehip Powder: Rosehip combines the traditional cosmetic use of Rosehip with a new application of Rosehip Seeds: exfoliation. Traditional use of Rosehip is mainly based on its sensorial properties, which convey an image both of delicacy and effectiveness. In the same way, Rosehip exfoliates the skin in a mild but efficient way, giving the skin a healthier and more radiant appearance.
Chamomile Flowers: Soothes skin rashes, minor burns, and sunburns. Used as a lotion or added in oil form to a cool bath, Chamomile may ease the itching of eczema and other rashes and reduces skin inflammation. It may also speed healing and prevent bacterial infection.
Full ingredient list: French Pink Clay, Rose Petals, Rosehip Powder, Chamomile Flowers
Sea Mist Hair Texturizing Spray: “Sea Mist Hair Spray is formulated with the same salinity as ocean saltwater. This spray is great for adding beachy texture and waves to hair naturally. The essential oils of coconut and vanilla give off an exotic aroma.”
Fortunately, HB has changed the scent of this hair spray to coconut + vanilla…which, yes please…sounds amazing! Anyway, I LOVE this texturizing sea salt spray! It’s like the Bumble + Bumble, or Kevin Murphy beachy waves spray…but formulated without all the alcohol, chemicals and toxic ingredients. It provides texture, a beautiful, light scent that lingers and it’s refreshing! You can also use this spritz for your body! It contains aloe water to hydrate your skin, and it’s also safe to use on your face. I just love all of its uses!
Aloe Vera: There are certain benefits of Aloe Vera that produce healthy hair. The gel obtained from a freshly-cut plant has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that can be enjoyed when the gel is applied on the hair and scalp. It helps to clear itching, dry scalps, and brittle hair.
Vanilla Essential Oil: This oil has a relaxing and calming effect on the brain and the nerves that provides relief from anxiety, anger, and restlessness.
Full ingredient list: Purified Water, Aloe Vera Water, Dead Sea Salt, Coconut CO2, Natural Vanilla Oil, Lime Essential Oil, Leucidal
Lapis Facial Oil: I saved the best for last! THE BEST, everyone. I kid you not, this oil has been a lifesaver for any inflamed, red, problematic skin I’ve had.
"Lapis Lazuli, a favorite stone of ancient Eygpt, is known for its gorgeous deep blue color. Lapis Facial Oil is named for the precious blue oils it contains, including Blue Tansy and Blue Yarrow. These oils contain a component called Azulene which acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial that aids in reducing redness and clarifying the complexion. Formulated for combination, oily, and blemish-prone skin types or any skin in need of relief from inflammation."
The ingredients in this facial oil are unbelievable and truly one-of-a-kind:
German Blue Chamomile: A highly sought out oil in the skincare world, due to its anti-inflammatory soothing properties. Excellent for calming inflamed skin due to acne blemishes. Also, reduces redness and broken capillaries in any skin type prone to red irritated skin conditions. Blue Chamomile is also a natural antibacterial that works to prevent blemishes from forming in the first place. This oil is steam distilled and is naturally a beautiful shade of deep aqua with a high Azulene content. It is also an antioxidant protecting the skin from the oxidant effects of free radical and premature aging.
Blue Yarrow and Blue Tansy: High in Azulene content giving them a deep inky blue color naturally. Azulene is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial that aids in reducing redness and clarifying the complexion. Additionally, blue oils are excellent at balancing oily skin without drying.
Jojoba Oil: Has amazing moisturizing capabilities due to being so similar in structure to our skin’s own natural sebum; it is easily absorbed and also helps other oils to absorb more deeply into the skin. This oil is also ideal for combination/oily skin types because it will never clog pores.
Squalane: Our Squalane is derived from a vegetable source — olives to be specific. Vegetable-derived Squalane has excellent emollient properties and acts as a light protective barrier to keep moisture in the skin. It also protects the skin against hyperpigmentation and premature aging.
Jasmine Sambac Oil: Comes from the night blooming variety of Jasmine. It is a sweet and exquisite oil that has been used in skincare and perfumery for centuries with good reason — the scent is intoxicating and the oil itself works to increase the skin’s moisture content and increase its elasticity. Our Jasmine Sambac comes from the steam distillation of thousands of jasmine petals.
Full ingredient list: Blue Tansy, Blue Yarrow, German Blue Chamomile, Grapeseed Oil, Kukui Nut Oil, Colorless Jojoba Oil, Jasmine Sambac Oil, Bulgarian Rose Absolute, Squalane, Vitamin E Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil
I mean, you can’t get any better than that. I use it every night, and sometimes during the day as a spot treatment – if needed! It is a skincare kit MUST.
When I first discovered Meow Meow Tweet, the first thing I thought was “HOW FREAKING AWESOME IS THIS COMPANY’S NAME!?!” but for real, though. Brilliant! Especially for a company that concocts all organic, vegan products with pure, natural and organic ingredients. Meow, meow indeed. I like a lot!
With more buzz than a bee, Meow Meow has been getting around with the press! Featured in popular magazines, renowned blogs, websites and more! So, I thought to myself, they MUST be doing something right.
Browsing their website was like eye-candy in itself! Bright, cheerful and colourful vibes all over the place! Suuuuper cute, simple, yet totally cool packaging. I couldn’t get enough! So, here I am..to tell YOU a few products I’m loving right now!
This little Mini-Travel Migrator Kit that you see above has been a Godsend! I was out of town last weekend and it made the trip with me. Lightweight, It’s perfect for traveling, for sticking in your purse (especially the deodorant and body oil) and they’re all the perfect little size!
I love all of the products, but some of my favourites would have to be the Face Toner, Body Oil and Deodorant Cream. Here’s a little rundown of what my faves do, and some of the ingredients in them:
This toner is great for a daily toning of the face for all skin types. Especially those with combination and blemish prone skin. This awesome toner can also be used as a makeup setter spray, aftershave (spray on to avoid ingrown hairs) and a scalp spray for dandruff. Gotta love a product that does more than just one thing!
Its ingredients are: hammamelis virginiana (wild harvested witch hazel) distillate, aqua (water), *rosa damascena (rose) hydrosol, *vegetable glycerin, *acetic acid (apple cider vinegar), *lavendula angustofolia (lavender), *pelargonium graveolens (geranium), *cymbopogon martini (palmarosa), *helichrysum italicum (immortelle) essential oils. (All the ingredients starred are certified organic)
This fresh and woody juniper berry scented oil combines with crisp peppermint and herbal rosemary to calm, tone and treat dry or weathered skin. I had no idea, but apparently it can also be used as a scalp treatment to promote hair growth and help with dandruff. Again, Meow Meow is killin’ it with the multiple/different ways of using their products! Getting more bang for your buck!
Okay. Deodorant. A tricky area for me…not only because my pits need to have a serious detox (read more on what that entails) but because I reaaaally love a great smelling armpit. That always proved a bit difficult for me when it came to natural, organic deodorants. But not anymore! This baking soda free deodorant cream made the switch to natural deodorant A LOT easier. If you have ever struggled with underarm sensitivity from baking soda, then this is definitely for you! Meow Meow has taken their well-loved classic deodorant cream and made a few modifications to create this new formula, perfect for those with sensitive skin and just as effective. It’s designed without baking soda and clay – what can cause sensitivities on some – this recipe uses dietary magnesium and arrowroot powder to help control moisture and odor. Interesting, right? Nourishing plant oils and butters soothe and condition the skin, and a really lovely blend of citrusy essential oils keeps you smelling so fresh and so clean-clean throughout the day! Two thumbs up!
Now, onto another important smelly (the good kind) topic! Natural perfumes. Oh boy..this can also be a doozy. Essential oils are essential (hehe) in this arena, as well as plant extracts and absolutes (they’re similar to essential oils).
Stilllifeis Meow Meow Tweet‘s line of natural perfumes. Pictured below is the Perfume Sample Set, in which there are 1/2 ml samples of the full line. Certified organic, and certified nose-pleasing! Here is the rundown of what they offer for scents:
Dreamtiger: Sweet, Fruity & Floral with a Woody Undertone with notes of Blood Orange, Ylang Ylang & Vetiver
Wild Heart:Floral, Brassy, & Fresh with notes of Rose, Geranium, Jasmine & Wood
Macondo: Grassy & Bold with a Tinge of Sweetness with notes of Wild Sage, Bergamot, Balsam & Fir
Green Cockatoo: Warm, Sweet and a Little Smokey with notes of Tobacco, Jasmine & Vanilla
Argonaut: Crisp, Bright & Herbaceously Floral with notes of Violet, Clary Sage & Patchouli
My two favourite scents would have to be Macondo and Green Cockatoo! It’s pretty conclusive of my personality and what I lean towards in the scent department. Candle-wise too!
