Ya’ll…this is probably one of my favourite (visually more than anything) music videos right now. Like, hands down so out there and colourful and loud. Not to mention I haven’t been able to get the song out of my head. So catchy! I love me some Kimbra.
Where do I even start?! So many amazing things I could say about this insanely talented, all-girl band. For starters, one of the members is one of my closest friends…(I promise though, I’m not biased) but it doesn’t stop there. Along with a set of musical skills, these girls have above and beyond what it takes to not only perform exceptional rock music, but entertain in the process. Truly, and naturally. Moseley is Suzie Chism (vocals – middle), Abby Hairston (drums – right) and Christy Callaway (bass – left). Three of some of the best gals I know.
The band started off as an idea, one that Christy thought would be awesome. I remember having her over during the summer, for porch hang nights and she would excitedly speak about her dreams of starting up a girl rock band. Something so rad that it would boldly stand out, aside from just being an all-chick ensemble.
“Let’s jam, let’s jam! I know a chick drummer!” Christy would say to the girls whenever she’d see them around.
“I thought the idea to be cheesy” says Chism. “But I was going through some things, and it was my birthday. Long story short, I bumped into Christy and Abby again one night at a bar in Nashville and the rest is history!”
Now, I could totally give you a bit of background on how the band was formed…but here, watch this video explaining it instead! (It’s way better than more words on a page, haha.)
The first time I ever heard Moseley play a show – which was in a rad, graffitied, dingy basement venue in a house (picture below) – I was crazy impressed. I mean, I already knew they were going to be mind-blowing just from what I knew about each of the individual girls talents…but gosh, their sound was so refreshing. Anyone with any bit of talent can form a band nowadays – especially in Nashville – but it isn’t typical you hear of really great all-girl bands. So, this was a big deal for me – like, in a nostalgic 90’s girl-band kind of way. Upon my first experience with Moseley, I described them (and still do) as a blend of Hole, Veruca Salt, Smashing Pumpkins and a bit of No Doubt. Seriously, HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THAT?!
Chism’s vocals are girly, but fierce. Sassy, but mischievously smooth. With such nonchalance, she belts out lyrics that tear your heart apart and then vigorously piece it back together. Christy’s gutsy, prominent bass lines make your heart flutter, giving each song an extra badass tone; and then the drums, well, the drums just pull it all together. Abby is one of the most talented female drummers I know. The majority of the songs are dripping with so much emotion, you can’t help but stand there and soak it all in…while still maintaining a solid head bang. Oh, and believe me, you will absolutely be seeing hair flyin’ around and lots of body motion; it’s inevitable.
The girls have been avidly touring and playing a myriad of shows since the beginning of last October. Since then, they’ve toured all the way from the top of Michigan back down to Nashville! They continue to melt faces everywhere they perform, and will be in Kentucky March 15 if you live in that area and want to check ’em out! I highly suggest you do! (I’ll post more info on tour dates below)
