Top Green Skincare Products

I’ll be real, for the longest time, I was a makeup girl. Skincare always came second for me…until one day, (quite some time ago) I realized that skincare was essential for healthy, beautiful glowing skin. The canvas to express my makeup looks on…it had to be prepped right, and with the best of the best ingredients!

So, with that being said, I wanted to share my top green skincare products! I’ve broken them down into categories, starting with my first routine – cleansing, and then the rest of the products consecutively follow! Keep in mind, these are what I use right now, on a daily/nightly basis and pretty much the ones I couldn’t live without.

Petit Vour September Box!

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

This months Petit Vour Beauty Box is so great! I can’t wait to dive in and give you a rundown on all the products – but first, if you’re not sure who Petit Vour is, or what they do… click HERE to read my first ever review and thoughts on this cute little company!

Now, let’s start! We’ve got some great goodies this month! And can we just take a moment to admire the beautiful card in this month’s box!? Illustrator Mia Charro (@miacharro) designed it. So pretty!

This months following items were:

Blissoma Herbal Gel Cleanser (2oz) ($16):  Free is a duo-purpose, restorative gel cleanser for when you need to remove difficult makeup and all the day’s dirt in one easy, healing wash. It’s perfect for the most reactive and allergic skin types due to it’s super pure, simple, and elegant botanical ingredients. Together in this beautifully balanced gel, herbs, soapbark, and gentle organic oils come together to rinse skin clean and balance it all at once.

Organic, food-grade Soapbark extract makes bubbles for your face, so you get a nice sudsing action. Along with that, an infusion of organic Yerba Mate sweeps over your skin bringing with it 196 active compounds. That’s more than the ever-popular Green Tea. The 11 Polyphenols Yerba Mate boasts possess potent cell protective properties. Combined with anti-inflammatory Olive Leaf, soothing Linden, regenerating Self Heal (Prunella), and gentle Cornflowers your skin has every reason to be restored. Even the delicate eye area can be easily washed free of waterproof makeup without tugging or any skin distress.

This gel rinses to a lighter and almost “squeaky” clean. It’s still free of any actual soaps though, and is the correct, skin-friendly, acidic PH. Free is also decidedly and appropriately “free” of even natural origin irritants. Free has no scents at all, no ethyl alcohol (grain alcohol), gluten, or nut ingredients, and avoids the usual list of synthetic nasties that never appear in our recipes. If you have really reactive skin then this cleanser is going to be your bff!

Elate Cosmetics Lipstick (Lively) ($17): I am obsessed with this lipstick! Actually, it’s a lipstick that acts more as a lip-tint – which I am not mad about!

It’s absolutely incredible, and super gorgeous on! Made with shea and mango butter, scented with organic vanilla essential oils..Elate doesn’t skimp on amazing, good-for-you ingredients!I love wearing it when I need moisture (seriously, that mango butter and shea do it well!) and a quick allover wash of colour on my lips! LOVE!

Mahalo Pele Mask (No Size Listed. Full Size $64 for 1.7oz):  This is a detoxifying bioactive mask that transforms dry, tired skin into a glowing complexion. It tightens pores, boosts circulation and cell-renewal, calms inflammations, combats and heals blemishes, fades dullness and reduces the signs of aging! You can mix it with water or hydrosol (herbal/floral water) and use it once a week. It can also be used as a spot treatment, which is always great, and now makes it a a nifty little two-in-one product!

MSC Skin Care Exfoliating Body Scrub (No Size Listed. Full Size $33 for 10.5oz): This grapefruit and spearmint body scrub is all organic and a dual-action exfoliator! The raw sugar exfoliates and removes dead skin cells, while a combination of shea butter, sunflower oil, and rice bran oil nourish fresh skin. It’s super invigorating, and super delicious smelling – surely your morning showers will be that much more awakening with this awesome little scrub!

As always, I highly recommend signing up for this monthly beauty box! It’s extremely easy to do and takes no time at all, and you can cancel at anytime! Make your way over to the Petit Vour website to get started!

“Moon River” sang by Audrey Hepburn from (one of my favourite classic movies) Breakfast At Tiffany’s!

Let You Hair Down, Tabitha James Kraan Style!

I think haircare is one of the more tricky things to get right when it comes to green beauty. I’ve always known that these organic, toxic-free formulas of shampoo/conditioner and other haircare products were better for my hair, I just wasn’t impressed with the results. I depended on my toxic go-to’s because they appeared to be giving me the effects/look/feel I wanted. So, when I started hearing about a new natural and organic haircare line – in which the word was starting spread like wildfire, I just had to check it out for myself!

Tabitha James Kraan has changed the organic haircare game, in the most luxurious way. Her products are gorgeous, natural and organic, completely free from harmful chemicals. The packaging is elegant, polished and the aluminum (I’m assuming) stands out against anything else I’ve seen, making this line instantly cool, luxurious and recognizable. The products were developed by organic hair guru Tabitha James Kraan who has an internationally renowned hair salon in the Cotswolds, in England. It had always been a vision of Tabitha’s to create her own collection of organic products, and for the last three years, her dream has gradually taken on reality as she’s worked with her lab, pushing the boundaries of hair alchemy, to create a range of products that meets her exacting standards.

These products are unlike any other luxury haircare products – in fact, I can’t remember the last time I found organic haircare products this luxurious! I also can’t get over the scent of these products! They have the most exquisite aromas. Especially the two pictured above!

Organic Dry Shampoo for Darker Hair – I love me some dry shampoo! I mean, I probably have like a sixth sense for that word…I perk up like “Dry Shampoo?! I need to try it!”  Typically, I stray away from the loose powder version of dry shampoos, buttttt, having read amazing reviews about this one, I decided why not!? Plus, the ingredients are 90% organic! So, that was comforting, and appealing to me.

This dry shampoo does exactly what you’d want it to do, with a really pretty, subtle scent.  I have to say, it creates great texture, however it can get a bit sandy-like after a few uses. Nothing terrible, just a bit more gritty than your usual dry shampoo. I can deal. There are so many other pros that outweigh that one tiny con! Oh, and the bottle will probably last you forever (it’s 6.7 fl.oz) depending how much you use it – which you really don’t need a ton to get the job done.

Organic Hair Perfume – So, if you haven’t noticed by now, TJK products aren’t the cheapest. I suppose that comes with the territory of luxury haircare, with organic, amazing, high quality ingredients. This Hair Perfume is (oddly) the most expensive product in the line at £49 (about $76 USD). Essentially, this perfume is a mixture of floral waters…how the heck was this supposed to impress me – or work!? Well, just as I’ve discovered with all of TJK‘s products, it works, really well…annnnd this has to be one of my favourite products!

You know those days where you know you need to wash your hair, but just end up putting it up in a bun? Or, in my case (short hair), a low pony-tail or messy pinned back hairdo? This perfume works WONDERS. Not only does it leave my hair smelling divine (seriously, unreal smelling) A few spritzes of this all over, followed by a gentle brush brings life to my hair! The packaging of this product is awesome, it has a spritzer which is perrrrrfect. It disperses a fine mist (which in turn makes you feel like you’re covering most of your head equally) rather than squirting the product out and feeling like you’re wasting precious drops of (very expensive) hair perfume. I recently learned that spraying normal perfume in your hair can damage it due to the alcohol content, (don’t worry – there’s NONE in this!) so a specialized hair perfume – such as this one – full of amazing organic oils is a much better option.

Amber Rose Hair Cleanser – Correct cleansing is the foundation to any good hair care routine. I mean, duh..that’s what we’re essentially wanting right? Clean hair. Well, the TJK Amber Rose Hair Cleanser will not only clean your hair, but it’ll restore it, AND revive your scalp so it’s healthy and nourished. This wonderful, certified organic formulation of aloe vera, oatmilk, argan oil, coconut oil, rosehip oil, essential oils of rose, patchouli, neroli, chamomile and ylang ylang, will nourish and protect your hair while giving you incredible shine and body.

4-In-1 Conditioner – My second favourite product from TJK! This is a multi-usage ‘miracle’ conditioner which can be used traditionally, as a leave-in treatment, a nourishing scalp cream and a texturise & curl styling cream. I know…amazing, right? Who wouldn’t want a 4-in-1 product that does all of these things?! Keeps it simple.

This 4-in-1 Conditioner moisturizes perfectly without being heavy. That is one of my biggest pet peeves, a conditioner that (even after it’s rinsed out) feels heavy, greasy and in turn leaves your hair looking and feeling dirty. I love that its lightness makes it appropriate as a leave-in treatment – something I’d NEVER do before because of those above-mentioned reasons. I love the ingredients it contains! A beautiful blend of certified organic rosehip oil, argan oil, coconut oil and essential oils of neroli, tangerine, bergamot and myrrh. Ooh, la la!

Beautycounter’s Routine Clean Cream Cleanser + Lip Conditioner Calendula Balm

“To get safe products into the hands of everyone” – the motto of Beautycounter.  They’ve banned more than 1,500 ingredients, setting new health and safety standards. I’m super excited to share these two products today because, well, they’re awesome…but also, I love this line of products!

Beautycounter created an everyday Essentials Face Collection to address essential skin and body care needs. This line is safe, effective, and works well for all skin types, while being free of toxins and harmful chemicals. The essential skin care line can be used by anyone – women, men, and even kid. The majority of their products use coconut oil (stay awaaaaay, if you’re allergic!) and, the even greater news? They’re all formulated without parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, SLS or “secret” ingredients. Yay!

So, let’s jump right in!

Routine Clean Cream Cleanser –  A facial cream cleanser gentle enough to be used both day and night. Organic coconut oil removes impurities and buildup. Aloe, green tea, witch hazel, and floral extracts promote the appearance of healthy, rejuvenated and toned skin. Purifying citrus oils add a refreshing scent.

How to use – Apply small amount onto face and rinse with water. Use with a warm wash cloth to remove cosmetics. I love this cleanser because it doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry, whatsoever. Removing makeup was quick and easy, and it definitely made my skin look brighter and feel healthier!

Lip Conditioner Calendula Balm – A (superbly) moisturizing lip balm formulated with Avocado Oil, Shea Butter, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, and Jojoba Seed Oil, which all have intrinsically regenerative properties. The sweet smell of the balm comes from the Calendula Officinalis Flower Oil and Anthemis Nobilis Flower (Chamomile) Oil whose anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritated skin.

How to use – You can apply with fingers or lip brush. :)

Definitely mention you want Carolyn Hendricks as your consultant at checkout of any Beautycounter purchase!

As per usual… here’s your song of the day! Flock of Dimes – “Icy” <3

I’m A Choosy Chick

The Choosy Chick box I received

Would you just look at all these goods!? The Choosy Chick knows how to supply a girl with some great clean products! The Choosy Chick (TCC) is committed to researching, sampling and selecting the finest non-toxic personal care products.  They’ve developed their very own standard (click to read more about that) for ingredients which has become the foundation for their product selections. What I love so much about TCC is that they are not only wonderful at what they do, but they are not fooled by natural sounding names, or natural looking packaging. They truly dig  deep to find products that meet their standard of organic and natural.  So, as a result of their ‘choosy’ nature, they offer the purest, most effective and unique products available right now. I just love that – getting to choose the products that fit right for you, and knowing that they’ve been hand-picked by some really smart, honest and organic-loving people!

The items seen in my box are:

All of these products have been used and absolutely loved! TCC really does pick the best products to be sold on their site – I am VERY impressed with the quality! The super cute packaging it came in doesn’t hurt either!

A few products I especially love are:

The Au Naturale Eye Pencil in ‘Coco’. It glides on SO smoothly (no tugging needed, hallelujah!) and the formulation is super gentle, so it won’t irritate my eyes. Win!  (Photo below of ‘Coco’ swatched on my arm.)

Josh Rosebrook’s Styling Cream. This. Stuff. Is. Awesome! It provides texture to my hair, with a nice medium hold (as it says) and smells AMAZING! Kind of like a lemon sorbet…YUM! I also love that this styling cream stimulates the cells in the hair follicle and feeds the scalp to keep your hair growing thick and beautiful. All of the benefits! Plus, it’s not stiff and washes easily from the hair. I can’t seem to get enough of it!

Check out this awesome song “Color” by New York songstress VÉRITÉ!

Meow Meow Tweet!

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

When I first discovered Meow Meow Tweet, the first thing I thought was “HOW FREAKING AWESOME IS THIS COMPANY’S NAME!?!” but for real, though. Brilliant! Especially for a company that concocts all organic, vegan products with pure, natural and organic ingredients. Meow, meow indeed. I like a lot!

With more buzz than a bee, Meow Meow has been getting around with the press! Featured in popular magazines, renowned blogs, websites and more! So, I thought to myself, they MUST  be doing something right.

Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 7.19.06 PM

Browsing their website was like eye-candy in itself! Bright, cheerful and colourful vibes all over the place! Suuuuper cute, simple, yet totally cool packaging. I couldn’t get enough! So, here I am..to tell YOU a few products I’m loving right now!

(From left to right) Face Exfoliant, Face Oil, Face Toner, Body Oil – Juniper Mint, Face Cleanser and Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream with Grapefruit, and (not pictured, cus I forgot…) Vegan Lip Balm – Rosemary EucalyptusProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

This little Mini-Travel Migrator Kit that you see above has been a Godsend! I was out of town last weekend and it made the trip with me. Lightweight, It’s perfect for traveling, for sticking in your purse (especially the deodorant and body oil) and they’re all the perfect little size!

I love all of the products, but some of my favourites would have to be the Face Toner, Body Oil and Deodorant Cream. Here’s a little rundown of what my faves do, and some of the ingredients in them:

Face Toner:

This toner is great for a daily toning of the face for all skin types. Especially those with combination and blemish prone skin. This awesome toner can also be used as a makeup setter spray, aftershave (spray on to avoid ingrown hairs) and a scalp spray for dandruff. Gotta love a product that does more than just one thing!

Its ingredients are: hammamelis virginiana (wild harvested witch hazel) distillate, aqua (water), *rosa damascena (rose) hydrosol, *vegetable glycerin, *acetic acid (apple cider vinegar), *lavendula angustofolia (lavender), *pelargonium graveolens (geranium), *cymbopogon martini (palmarosa), *helichrysum italicum (immortelle) essential oils. (All the ingredients starred are certified organic)

Body Oil – Juniper Mint:

This fresh and woody juniper berry scented oil combines with crisp peppermint and herbal rosemary to calm, tone and treat dry or weathered skin. I had no idea, but apparently it can also be used as a scalp treatment to promote hair growth and help with dandruff. Again, Meow Meow is killin’ it with the multiple/different ways of using their products! Getting more bang for your buck!

Its ingredients are: *helianthus annuus (sunflower) oil, *cannabis sativa (hempseed) oil, *simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, *cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, *juniperus communis (juniper) essential oil, *rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) essential oil, *mentha piperita (peppermint) essential oil. (All the ingredients starred are certified organic)

Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream with Grapefruit:

Okay. Deodorant. A tricky area for me…not only because my pits need to have a serious detox (read more on what that entails) but because I reaaaally love a great smelling armpit. That always proved a bit difficult for me when it came to natural, organic deodorants. But not anymore! This baking soda free deodorant cream made the switch to natural deodorant A LOT easier. If you have ever struggled with underarm sensitivity from baking soda, then this is definitely for you! Meow Meow has taken their well-loved classic deodorant cream and made a few modifications to create this new formula, perfect for those with sensitive skin and just as effective. It’s designed without baking soda and clay – what can cause sensitivities on some – this recipe uses dietary magnesium and arrowroot powder to help control moisture and odor. Interesting, right? Nourishing plant oils and butters soothe and condition the skin, and a really lovely blend of citrusy essential oils keeps you smelling so fresh and so clean-clean throughout the day! Two thumbs up!

Its ingredients are: *maranta arudinacea (arrowroot) powder, *butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, magnesium hydroxide, *cocos nucifera (virgin coconut) oil, *simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, *cirus paradisii (grapefruit) essential oil, *citrus bergamia (bergamot) essential oil, *citrus sinensis (sweet orange) essential oil, *citrus limon (lemon) essential oil. (All the ingredients starred are certified organic)

Now, onto another important smelly (the good kind) topic! Natural perfumes. Oh boy..this can also be a doozy. Essential oils are essential (hehe) in this arena, as well as plant extracts and absolutes (they’re similar to essential oils).

Stilllife is Meow Meow Tweet‘s line of natural perfumes. Pictured below is the Perfume Sample Set, in which there are 1/2 ml samples of the full line. Certified organic, and certified nose-pleasing! Here is the rundown of what they offer for scents:

Dreamtiger: Sweet, Fruity & Floral with a Woody Undertone with notes of Blood Orange, Ylang Ylang & Vetiver

Wild Heart: Floral, Brassy, & Fresh with notes of Rose, Geranium, Jasmine & Wood

Macondo: Grassy & Bold with a Tinge of Sweetness with notes of Wild Sage, Bergamot, Balsam & Fir

Green CockatooWarm, Sweet and a Little Smokey with notes of Tobacco, Jasmine & Vanilla

ArgonautCrisp, Bright & Herbaceously Floral with notes of Violet, Clary Sage & Patchouli

My two favourite scents would have to be Macondo and Green Cockatoo! It’s pretty conclusive of my personality and what I lean towards in the scent department. Candle-wise too!
