Laurel. Plants, Love, Science

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Plants. Herbs. Flowers. All beautiful things, and incredibly beneficial to our well-being. Not only within the food pyramid, but for our bodies and skin. So, what makes Laurel different from any other line of organic skincare? Their whole plant, flower and herb based ingredients. Their biodynamic and raw, unrefined whole plant ingredients. Their purity, unmatched.

I was incredibly excited to try out Laurel and after about a week of testing these lovely products (aren’t they packaged so elegantly?), here’s a quick little review of their benefits, ingredients and why you should try them out!

Why Laurel is different:

  • No water, no alcohol, no fillers: ONLY beneficial active plants
  • 100% Whole Plant Organic Formulas
  • No chemically refined plant ingredients
  • No toxins or synthetics of any kind
  • Handmade with love
  • Artisan farm sourced ingredients

You sold yet? I am. Properly nourishing your face and skin is just as important as nourishing your body. Laurel balances, cleanses, nourishes and heals. Almost imm ediately.

Hands down one of my favourite Laurel products to use at the moment. The Anti-inflammatory Serum does exactly what you think it does. It soothes, calms, and restores your skin. If I’m just a little bit red around my jawline, or nose, I gently pat it on those areas. It works wonders to dry skin too, and it has plant ingredients in it that have been linked to sun-protection. Here’s a little overview:

Skin type:

  • Sensitive / Rosacea / Inflamed / Acne / Reactive skin
  • 100% Whole Plant Organic
  • 25 Beneficial Active Ingredients, some of which are:
    • Borage  reduces inflammation, high in essential fatty acids, prevents wrinkles and scarring
    • Blue Chamomile – cooling, anti-inflammatory, cell-regenerative for skin, and heals scars
    • Baicall Skullcap – a powerful anti-inflammatory, used to manage all types of inflammation in the body, and rich in antioxidants
    • Helichrysum – anti-inflammatory, cleansing, antiseptic, and cell regenerating
    • Lemon balm – high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and helps heal inflamed/problem skin

“The Anti-Inflammatory facial serum is an ideal moisturizer for sensitive skin, cystic acne, and rosacea, as well as all skin types suffering from any signs of inflammation. Signs of inflammation include dry patches, redness, uneven skin tone, breakouts, eczema, collagen loss, broken capillaries, and so on. Its powerful anti-inflammatory properties and rapid absorption, as well as its healing and soothing nature, are truly transformative.

This serum features a whole plant blend of: Chinese Skullcap, LicoriceChamomile, and Astragalus to help to reduce inflammation, soothe dry patches, treat broken capillaries, even skin tone, and reduce redness, as well as breakouts. Addressing inflammation is step one of of ALL skin care regimes, because when the skin is inflamed, it cannot function in a healthy way. An earthy, herbal blend of organic and therapeutic grade essential oils of Helichrysum, Lemon Balm, Blue Chamomile, Neroli, and Myrrh is added to calm, soothe, and restore skin health.

**Like the other Laurel Whole Plant Organic serums, this serum also contains plants that have been linked to sun protection, such as Red Raspberry Seed, Cranberry Seed, and Jojoba.**”

This Healing Balm is THE BOMB…or should I say the balm? (But really.) This thing works miracles. For example, I had some sort of dry patch near my mouth, applied a dab on it before bed and woke up to it completely soft and restored. Crazy! I love when products just simply work!

Skin type:

  • All skin types
  • 100% Whole Plant Organic
  • 14 Beneficial Active Ingredients, some of which are:

    • Helichrysum – anti-inflammatory, cleansing, antiseptic, and cell regenerating
    • Tamanu – anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antibacterial, stimulates skin immunity, treats broken capillaries, delays onset of freckles and hyper-pigmentation
    • Pomegranate – a powerful antioxidant, deeply nourishing to the outer epidermal layer
    • Calendula – promotes cellular healing, has beneficial skin restoration properties
    • Lavender – anti-inflammatory, promotes growth of new cells, calming and cooling to skin

“The Healing Balm is a truly magical heal-all and can benefit any skin type. From extremely sensitive faces, to occasional cuts and scrapes, and on to more extreme cases of eczema or dermatitis – this is a must have for any medicine cabinet. This balm features a whole plant blend of Calendula, Comfrey, Lavender, Yarrow, Marshmallow, and Self Heal to soothe, heal, calm inflammation, and treat irritations. A sweet herbal blend of organic and therapeutic grade essential oils of Lavender, Lemon Balm, and Helichrysum is included to soothe, heal, and treat skin irritations.”

That Self Heal ain’t a joke. This balm will be a mandatory staple for my skincare regimen for years to come!

Just the name “elixir” sounds magical to me. This Facial Elixir: Oily/Combination is absolutely that.

Kiss My Honey is The Balm!

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Welcome back, friends!

I trust you all had a wonderful Easter weekend and spent some time with family/friends!

I wanted to introduce to you, and do a quick review on what you see right up there in that there photograph (I actually wrote that like I was reading that with a twang…). Kiss My Honey Lip Balm! My new obsession as far as lip balms are concerned. I have been wearing it on my lips now for a few days and notice a MEGA difference. No gimmicks here, folks. I don’t play around with lip stuff. I am a stickler for a good balm, mainly cus my lips can get so dry and goodness, it gets so annoying…but these two balms are just bliss! The ingredients are preservative free, chemical free, and paraben free. Not to mention their two flavours, Chocolate and Mint, are great.

So, let’s talk about the ingredients in these balms (specifically the Chocolate balm) for a hot minute!  They’re comprised of organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic unrefined Shea butter, vitamin E Grapefruit seed extract, organic sweet almond oil, organic peppermint essential oil (for mint flavored) and 100% chocolate flavor oil (chocolate flavored lip balm). Let me tell you what…I want chocolate every time I pop open that Chocolate lip balm lid. It smells THAT great.

The consistency of these balms is smooth, almost velvety like. It doesn’t have ANY stickiness whatsoever – which occurs often with some natural balms that use honey – and I LOVE THAT. Both Chocolate and Mint balms are colourless – which I prefer (for lipstick over it purposes). They just glide on over your lips with ease, leaving them feeling soft and “kissable” (haha) for forever! Even hours after the first fresh coat, my lips are so soft. It’s a nice change from all the crappy balms that just dry out, or have too much fragrance in them…including parabens and other non-quality ingredients. That being said, I can put the lip balm on before my lipstick of choice and it isn’t greasy or sticky, so the lipstick just glides on top of it with no issue at all and my lips look moisturized and softer. Who wouldn’t want that?!

I have made up my mind recently that I am going to slowly transition my everyday cosmetics, beauty and body products – including all my daily makeup – from toxic to organic, natural, makeup. These balms are a great start! Baby steps, ladies. No need to rush. In fact, here’s a great blog post by the wonderful Amanda over at Organic Bunny about “How To Switch From Toxic Makeup to Natural Makeup“. I learned a lot, and will continue to keep on keepin’ on with this!

That’s all for today, folks! Thanks for reading, I hope these posts encourage, inspire, motivate, excite you, and all the other great verbs. If you’d like to purchase these balms, and find out more regarding Kiss My Honey lip products, you may do so HERE, as well as check out their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and blog!

And last – but certainly not least – here’s a little somethin’ somethin’ for ya music-heads (like myself). It has Honey in the track title…so, naturally, I had to. Plus, Joseph Arthur is wonderful. Like a quiet, restful nap on a Sunday afternoon. Enjoy!

One Love for One Love Organics

Happy Saturday wonderful weekenders!

I’m pretty excited about today’s featured beauty products! (And first real beauty post in awhile.) I excitedly posted on my Instagram today, this here photo:

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

One Love Organics! This company shouldn’t really be a stranger to you, or one you’re just now hearing about, as they have been featured in The New York Times, Elle Magazine, Marie Claire, Style MagazineLucky Magazine (to name a few), have won countless beauty awards (depicted below), and as well are sold in select retail stores such as the well loved Anthropologie. But…it’s okay if you’ve been in the dark – I technically was too until I actually tried these amazing products out for myself!

Screen Shot 2015-04-04 at 10.30.24 AM Screen Shot 2015-04-04 at 10.30.33 AM

So, let’s start off with the story behind One Love! The wonderful curators at  Beauty Sage so eloquently stated:

“Founder Suzanne LeRoux first worked as a lawyer, but was constantly fascinated by alternative healing. So naturally, she started studying holistic nutrition, herbs and aromatherapy on the side to learn how to create simple products without preservatives.

Suzanne enlisted the help of her husband and childhood BFF—still the financial and creative brains of the operation today—and in 2010, One Love was born. Every formula in the skincare line is 100 percent natural, made with high-quality cold-pressed oils, and uses fair-trade ingredients wherever possible. No chemicals and preservatives— just simple, pure, effective products that work.”

I mean, there it is. Simply put. Products that are clean, simple, organic in their purest form – One Love Organics in a nutshell. Truly luxurious and simple, beautiful care for your skin.

Alright, so, typically I wouldn’t be posting a review unless I had at least five days to a week testing out a product. It’s only been about three days now that I’ve had these babies…HOWEVER, I am smitten with the results already! The way my skin feels, the way it glows! Just unbelievable! Of course, appearance isn’t just everything though – even if it IS skincare! I actually feel better, psychologically and emotionally. That may seem strange to some of you, but what I mean by that is that I am putting natural, whole and non-toxic ingredients on my face. I am actually NOURISHING it, instead of stripping it ‘clean’ of its natural properties. I have always struggled with combo/sensitive skin, drier in the winter months, oilier in the summer…as many, I suppose. These products, so far, have balanced my natural lipids and overall brightened, nourished, and smoothed out my skin. I can’t say enough great things!

Here are some of the products I’ve been using and adoring:

Elizabeth Dehn for One Love Organics
Active Moisture – Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil & Makeup Remover

and

The Cleansing Sponge – Rose Clay Heart

This is just the creme-de-la-creme of cleansing oils! Not to mention it doubles as a makeup remover. Gotta love a 2-in-1 skincare deal!

All you have to do to cleanse with this lovely concoction is warm about one-two pumps between your hands – I apply it in the palm of my hand and rub it around – then apply it to your dry face. You can either leave it on like that and use a makeup cotton square to remove it all, but I love massaging it in and really working it in all the little made-up crevices. I then add warm water and keep massaging it in, until it transforms into a beautiful milky consistency. Guys, it’s an experience! I then rinse clean, and in comes the Rose Clay Heart sponge! This little heart sponge is amazing! I dampen it in warm water until it softens, expands and doubles in its original size. I give my face a good run-over in circular motions to remove any excess dirt, rinse thoroughly and then hang to dry! Voila! Easy peasy.

Active Moisture – Vitamin C Serum

Alrighty, so THIS serum…oof. I don’t even know if I could properly explain to you the amazing active ingredients and the magic they have on my skin. So, I’ll let One Love explain it, as they do so well on their site:

“This 100% active face serum uses a potent mix of antioxidants to naturally brighten and replenish skin for a more radiant, even-toned complexion. An ultra-concentrated combination of vitamins A, C, D, & E and antioxidants from organic green tea oil and supercritical sea buckthorn oil help protect against free radicals that can cause photo damage and skin discoloration. Rich in the rare fatty acid Omega 7 and Omega 3, 6, 9 fatty acids, this serum helps to restore moisture levels and helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”

Yep. I know..amazing, right? All I need is about three pumps of this stuff and I’m set. Gently massaging the crap out of my face, cus it LOVES IT AND SOAKS IT IN. Food for your skin, ya’ll. It’s real, and it works.

One Love Organics
Love Springs Eternal – Youth Preservation Serum

ATTENTION ALL WOMEN! This serum is youth in a bottle! I kid you not. Miraculous product right here!

“..watermelon seed oil to smooth, dissolve build-up and provide a rich composition of essential fatty acids, Bulgarian Rose Oil to tone and moisturize, and clinically proven D’Orientine S (the S stands for sshh! secret) to help protect skin from environmental sources of aging and wrinkling.”

How could you NOT want that? I mean, had I not even read what it did – the results would have been enough for me. It legitimately works wonders…my skin is just smoother, brighter, younger and happier (even though I am only 27 – now is the time to preserve it ladies!). Have I mentioned it’s a breeze to use too? Simple care is what I’m all about! No crazy gloves, or annoying spatulas and kits. All I do is dispense a small amount of this youth in a bottle (can I rebrand this? Haha..) and apply it to my clean, damp skin, every night before bedtime. Fool proof, really. You just gotta try it!

There you have it. One Love Organics. Blowing my mind, as you clearly can see! I can’t wait to continue using these amazing products, not to mention, I’ll DEFINITELY be adding on to my collection in the near future!

Thank you for all you do, One Love Organics! I truly appreciate your holistic, simple, organic and honest approach in skincare. Oh, and Happy Easter Weekend, everyone!

Bonjour! I am baaaack!

Must-See-Makeup-Illustrations-Julia-Minamata-2011-06-21-030132

Hello beauties! Ladies, and gents!

I’m aware, I’m aware…I’ve been gone for FOREVER. Like, really, forever…it’s been way too long. BUT, in the process of this little M.I.A ordeal (not the singer, the acronym), I have had time to really plan on where I’ve been wanting this blog to go to next. Next? Like, i.e.:

1. immediately following in time, order, importance, etc.: the next day; the next person in line.
2. nearest or adjacent in place or position: the next room.
3. nearest in relationship or kinship.

See, that’s what I’ve been struggling with! CONTENT. Content that I actually feel excited to post about, excited to share and talk about! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE MUSIC (duh..it’s muh life). However, I also love beauty. Cosmetics. Skincare. Pharmaceuticals. Makeup reviews. Makeup tips…etc, etc. I have a passion for it. It’s kinda outta control sometimes….but hey, that’s what passion is right? Errr…right.

As you all know (or may know), I am a freelance makeup artist (weddings, fun styled shoots etc). So, makeup is something I actually do on occasion. I love it! It’s a chance for me to use my artistic talents, think outside of the box, play around, relax (it’s therapeutic for me) and have fun. If there is one thing any of my friends or family would tell you about me, it’d be that I am a walking mini store (and possibly even encyclopedia) for makeup, lipsticks, and other beauty products. I constantly have swatches on my hand or arm, two or more lipsticks in my purse – actually, I think at one point I may have had like a whole mini case FULL of lipsticks and glosses (11 to be exact). I love giving advice on how to apply makeup, what to wear…what not to wear, what’s healthy for your skin, what isn’t so healthy and so on. Again, like I said, PASSION. It’s real.

(Just me being artsy..don’t worry about it.)

So, alas, here we are. Where are you going with this Sammie, you may ask? Exactly where I want to. This blog will be filled with beauty items, reviews, photos of #whatsinmypurse, #makeuptipswithsammie, occasional giveaways, tips on what to look for when purchasing makeup, tips on how to save money while doing so, luxury items, quality items, organic and holistic care (cus LAWD knows I love me some of that) and THEN – BAM – your classic A Musical Mind playlist of sorts to go along with the mood of the day/week/month! Or, just my faves at the moment. Implementing the two things I love and am passionate about: makeup and music. What could be better? Makeup, music and unending sushi? Duh. Okay, okay, but really. Hope you all like what’s comin’ for ya! I’m excited. Stay tuned, kids. The best is yet to come!

P.s. Speaking of music…here’s one of my favourite songs at the moment! A rad band from Bristol, England by the name of Meadowlark. Good stuff, good stuff!

Jordana Loves: The Honey Trees ‘Bright Fire’

Hey everyone! Sammie here. Just wanted to preface this post by saying how excited I am for the this guest blogger (my sister) and the next post on Saturday (a surprise). Hope you enjoy them and feel free to leave comments or ideas or whatever! Thanks so much, and enjoy Jordie‘s post!

HoneyTrees2

It’s finally here, a new record by The Honey Trees! I discovered this lovely duo a few years ago on Myspace, ha! (those were the days). I remember instantly falling in love with Becky & Jacob’s beautiful melodies and almost perfect harmonies. I played their Wake the Earth EP over and over again, longing for more and alas! Here it is! Their new record ‘Bright Fire’ dropped in April, and like their last EP, this one has been on repeat a lot lately. This is the kind of album you just lay on your floor and listen to. It’s downright dreamy, whimsical, poetic and just beautiful. I especially love how 60’s inspired some of the tracks are. You’ll just have to take a listen for yourself! Purchase it here or on iTunes!

Video of the week: Rae Morris “Do You Even Know?”

Rae Morris has really outdone herself this time….I am utterly enamoured with her new video for her track titled “Do You Even Know?“.

This young Blackpool native is nothing short of a sensation. I discovered her a bit late to the game, unfortunately, while listening to the newest Bombay Bicycle Club record (she’s the female lead in “Luna”, in which she is absolutely AMAZING), and I haven’t disliked a single song of hers yet! (Don’t plan on it either.) Morris’ sound is sophisticated, delicate, and classy, all while garnering refreshing elements to her tunes. At times she reminds me a tad bit of Bjork, dare I say!

“I’d say that I’m a singer songwriter primarily; I play piano and build the sound from there. I’m a little obsessed with the combination of organic and synthetic; beautiful raw piano with delicate electronic elements and rhythm..” said Rae in a recent interview done by The Tab.

One of the main reason why I love Rae; her ability to fuse various styles of music together flawlessly. She maintains this beautiful, classic sound, and yet still surprises you with her many talents. Not to mention, she possesses the ability to awe you with her striking beauty and style…and that hair. Oh, that hair!

The video, in combination with Morris’ stationary, mannequin-like poses, and stop motion becomes less of a query in search of an answer and more of a statement on loneliness, relationships and communication. “I wanted people to be able to feel the discomfort and awkwardness of feeling misunderstood,” says Morris. “I wanted people to see me as a mannequin shining on the outside but with the inside well hidden.

Take a look and listen for yourself:

New Music Video: Love At The End

Processed with VSCOcam with lv02 preset

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to be in a music video my friend Jared Hogan shot and helped direct for local Charlotte artist John Mark McMillan. Man, talk about talent. It is amazing to watch these guys do what they love, and do it so well. I had such a blast working with some of my friends, as well as my brother – he was the production assistant. Good times all around!

My scene in the video was shot at Morning Glory Farm, my brother’s fiancee Maggie‘s (did ya get that?) family farm and home. They have a couple of horses on the farm, and they were also quickly featured in the video! (Seriously, I love horses..so, it’s even more rad to me.)

I absolutely love the concept of the video, the imagery, the message, the dancing, the song, I just love it all. But don’t take my word for it, check it out yourself below and enjoy! :)
